The Federal government of the United States has briefed foreign allies, including the United Kingdom, on a proposal to ban diesel exports. The move has raised immediate concerns regarding fuel shortages in the U.S. and abroad, specifically within Latin America and Europe.
Analysts warn that the ban could increase domestic gasoline prices by reducing crude runs in U.S. refineries and force European nations to utilize strategic diesel reserves before the winter season. These pressures are compounded by existing Russian bans on diesel and gasoline exports, which already constrain global supply.
In response to the volatility, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve announced a release of 40 million barrels. However, the International Energy Agency has indicated that there are currently no plans for further reserve releases to stabilize the market.
