Poundland Management Team Negotiates Rescue Bid to Save 11,000 Jobs

Poundland boss Barry Williams and former executive Andy Bond are in advanced talks with a financial backer to lead a management buyout of the retailer.

A management team led by Barry Williams, the current boss of Poundland, and former executive Andy Bond is in advanced negotiations with an unnamed financial backer to launch a rescue bid for the discount retailer. The proposed buyout aims to prevent the company from being broken up and protect up to 11,000 jobs.

The current owners, Gordon Brothers, previously engaged Alvarez & Marsal to manage a sale of the business for a reported £30 million. This process attracted interest from Modella Capital and the U.S.-based firm Fortress.

Financial performance for the retailer has been volatile. Poundland reported an £85 million pre-tax loss for the year ending September 2025, though it has recently seen a 3.3% growth rate at established stores. Management expects pre-tax earnings to improve by approximately £80 million over the previous year. Despite these signs of recovery, ownership uncertainty has reportedly caused an insurer to withdraw credit from some suppliers, creating a potential risk to the supply of goods.
