Judge Orders OpenAI to Give Apple Hiring Records

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila ordered OpenAI to provide Apple Inc. with expedited access to hiring records in a trade secrets lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila ordered OpenAI to provide Apple Inc. with expedited access to hiring records, interview materials, and technical presentations as part of a trade secrets lawsuit filed in July. The court granted Apple access to materials involving former Apple employees who joined OpenAI's robotics and consumer hardware groups.

Apple alleges a pattern of theft in which former employees used company laptops to download confidential data on unannounced technologies and coached others on what information to bring to OpenAI interviews. As part of the ruling, the judge approved the release of private LINE messages and depositions for former Apple employees now at OpenAI, including Chief Hardware Officer Tang Yew Tan, Chang Liu, and Alyssa Peng.

While granting access to hiring records, Judge Davila denied Apple's requests to expedite access to OpenAI's research and development regarding metal finishes and power management. However, the judge allowed Apple to refine and resubmit those specific requests for further consideration.
