Glasgow City Council Faces Backlash Over Senior Pay Hikes
Glasgow City Council faces criticism after records show senior staff received raises while 11% of employees face potential pay cuts under a new grading system.
Freedom of Information requests revealed that 23 senior Glasgow City Council staff members received promotions or salary re-gradings between 2023 and 2026. Those at grade 11 or higher now earn more than £100,000 per year. These increases coincide with a proposed new pay and grading system that could result in pay cuts for 11% of the council's workforce.
Councillor Paul Carey criticized the disparity, arguing that frontline workers in care services and schools are facing losses of thousands of pounds. He described these potential cuts as "life-changing money" and asserted that workers should not pay for decisions they did not make.
Glasgow City Council defended the new scheme, stating it applies to all senior staff and is not restricted to lower grades. The council also clarified that the recent senior promotions were separate from the new grading process. This conflict follows a period where the council paid hundreds of millions of pounds to settle previous equal pay claims.
