Yankton County Sheriff Deputies Vote Unanimously to Join Teamsters
Yankton County sheriff's deputies in South Dakota voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 120 to secure better contract negotiations and workplace representation.
Sheriff's deputies in Yankton County, South Dakota, voted unanimously on July 21, 2026, to unionize by joining Teamsters Local 120. The deputies organized to gain a greater voice in workplace decisions and seek more professional representation during contract negotiations.
Teamsters Local 120 represents more than 15,000 workers across the Upper Midwest, while the broader International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents over 26,000 law enforcement and public safety employees nationwide. Deputy Austin Schuller stated the move ensures deputies have a seat at the table and a voice in decisions affecting their work.
Although Yankton County Commissioners and the sheriff initially declined to comment, the commission chair subsequently announced that three individuals would be appointed to lead negotiations with the union.
