Canadian Heavy Oil Discount Hits Three-Year High

Canadian oil producers face record price discounts as the government pushes for trade diversification to reduce reliance on United States refiners.

The discount for Western Canadian Select heavy crude oil in Alberta has widened to $31 per barrel relative to West Texas Intermediate, marking the largest gap since October 2022. On the US Gulf Coast, the discount reached a record high since 2018 at $23.50 per barrel. This price pressure stems from a build-up of Venezuelan imports and record-high tanker rates that have increased export costs.

While global benchmarks like Brent futures have surged to approximately $115 a barrel due to the Iran War, the steep discount has limited profits for pure Canadian producers. Currently, approximately 90% of Canadian oil is exported to US refiners.

In response, the Government of Alberta and the Canadian government are prioritizing trade diversification to reduce dependence on the US market. This strategy includes supporting a new million-barrel-a-day pipeline to British Columbia to access Asian markets. Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd. has already secured long-term capacity on the expanded Trans Mountain Corporation pipeline to facilitate this shift.
