eMarketer Projects OpenAI Will Miss Ad Revenue Target by 90%
Research firm eMarketer estimates OpenAI will miss its 2030 advertising revenue forecast by approximately 90%, potentially destabilizing multi-year compute commitments with partners like Oracle.
OpenAI is on pace to miss its own five-year advertising revenue forecast by approximately 90%, according to research firm eMarketer. While the AI company projected advertising revenue of $2.5 billion for 2026, scaling to $100 billion by 2030, eMarketer estimates the entire U.S. chatbot ad market will generate only $5.41 billion by 2030. This total includes contributions from competitors such as Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot.
OpenAI's projections depend on capturing significant search advertising budgets and dominating a mature chatbot market, though the company only began advertising trials in February 2026. This revenue gap creates financial risks for multi-year compute commitments, particularly with Oracle, which holds $75 billion in AI-linked performance obligations tied to GPU arrangements.
Market sensitivity to these targets remains high. A separate report in April 2026 regarding missed internal growth targets previously triggered significant sell-offs for AI-linked stocks, including NVIDIA, Broadcom, and SoftBank. Meanwhile, Alphabet Inc. continues to challenge OpenAI's market position as its Gemini AI gains ground on the traffic share of ChatGPT.
