Clayton Glass Enters Administration Cutting 290 Jobs

UK glass manufacturer Clayton Glass entered administration on September 18, 2026, leading to 290 redundancies across manufacturing sites in Blackburn, North Lanarkshire, and County Durham. The company, founded in 1956, struggled with high energy and raw material costs, rising fixed costs, and soft demand in the housing market.

Joint administrators from Interpath Advisory managed a transaction that sold a portion of the business and assets to Clayton Glass Group Limited, an entity backed by the former management team. This deal secured 283 jobs and preserved operations at sites in Nottingham, Swindon, Canterbury, and Dewsbury. However, the facility in Stanley, County Durham, where approximately 160 people were employed, was among those closed.

Staff at the Stanley site reported they only learned of the financial failure and the fact that they would not receive their wages after arriving for work on Friday. Luke Akehurst, MP for North Durham, condemned the timing of the announcement as badly mismanaged, while Durham County Council launched a support package via Employability Durham and Business Durham to assist redundant workers and affected supply chain companies.
