Financial Experts Advise Budgeting as Back-to-School Costs Rise

Financial experts and retail federations urge families to plan early and avoid credit debt as K-12 school spending averages over $800 per student.

Rising costs for back-to-school supplies are straining family budgets across the United States, with the National Retail Federation reporting average expenditures of $858 for K-12 students. The Kentucky Retail Federation notes a similar trend in Kentucky, where spending averages $863 per student, contributing to a projected national total exceeding $43 billion.

Financial analysts emphasize the importance of early planning to avoid the stress of compressed seasonal spending. In Missouri, which ranks ninth nationally for spending burden according to LendingTree, households expect to spend over $800. To manage these costs, parents have begun shopping as early as June and are increasingly utilizing secondhand retailers, community giveaways, and price comparisons.

Experts recommend that families create categorized lists of requirements to differentiate needs from wants and suggest saving a monthly portion of the previous year's total to prepare for future cycles. To alleviate immediate burdens, some regions have implemented tax holidays, such as South Carolina's tax-free weekend, which exempts school supplies from the 6% state sales tax. Planners caution against using high-interest credit cards for these purchases to avoid long-term debt.
