Staff Shortages and Strong Winds Disrupt Australian Airports

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Catherine King condemned significant flight delays at Sydney Airport over a chaotic period in August 2026. The disruptions began over the weekend when Airservices Australia, the government-owned air traffic control provider, implemented departure spacing due to staff shortages. This action resulted in delays for more than 250 domestic and international flights on Friday and Saturday.

Following a meeting with the chief executive officer of Airservices Australia on Monday, King announced that the agency committed to implementing improved rostering at the airport starting in early September. The weekend chaos also included a near-collision between two passenger jets on the ground.

Travel disruptions continued on Tuesday, August 11, as strong winds affected three major Australian airports. Sydney Airport implemented a ground delay program until 2 p.m., with approximately 140 of 780 scheduled departures delayed by about 45 minutes. Melbourne Airport reported delays affecting nearly 200 of 620 scheduled flights, while Qantas cancelled three flights from Melbourne and Brisbane due to the weather.
