ACCA Report Finds AI Primary Ethical Challenge for Accountants
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants reports that 61% of professionals view AI as their top ethical challenge, prompting a redesign of professional qualifications.
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants released a report titled "Navigating ethics for trust," revealing that 61 percent of professional accountants now identify artificial intelligence as their primary ethical challenge. This represents a sharp increase from 32 percent in 2024. The study, which surveyed 1,178 professionals across 135 countries, also identified ethical leadership (43 percent) and ethical culture (39 percent) as top concerns.
While 89 percent of respondents believe the profession's ethical capability remains strong, 50 percent stated that ethical challenges have become harder to resolve over the last three years, and 53 percent reported witnessing unethical behavior. Sundeep Jakhar noted that as AI becomes embedded in financial decision-making, responsible use is a critical priority to maintain professional trust.
In response to these findings, the organization provided a 10-step toolkit for applying the International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants. Additionally, the association announced a redesigned qualification for next year that integrates ethics throughout the curriculum to help future generations navigate emerging technological challenges.
