Reserve Bank of India Reports Resilient Growth Amid Supply Pressures and West Asia Crisis

The Reserve Bank of India reported domestic demand is driving growth, but supply-side pressures, rising inflation, and the West Asia crisis cloud the near-term outlook.

The Reserve Bank of India assessed India's economy as resilient but flagged mounting risks from supply-side pressures, weather uncertainties, and the West Asia crisis in two reports released on May 22, 2026. The central bank's April State of the Economy report and its monthly bulletin both emphasized that domestic demand remains the primary growth engine, even as external headwinds intensify.

Industrial activity and rural automobile sales showed strength, and listed private non-financial companies posted double-digit growth in aggregate sales and operating profit for Q4 of 2025-26. The services sector also held firm. However, the labor market moderated in the first quarter of 2026, and air passenger traffic declined as rising fuel costs weighed on travel.

Inflation presented a mixed picture. Headline CPI inflation remained within the tolerance band but rose to 3.5% in April, driven primarily by food costs. The Wholesale Price Index climbed to a 42-month high of 8.3% in the same month, and the RBI warned that pass-through from geopolitical uncertainties to domestic prices requires close monitoring.

The West Asia crisis disrupted export orders and inbound tourism while contributing to supply chain pressures and crude oil price volatility. On the agricultural front, summer sowing advanced rapidly thanks to above-normal pre-monsoon rainfall, though unseasonal rains and high temperatures threatened rabi crop harvesting.

Foreign portfolio investors remained net sellers in April and May, though net foreign direct investment stayed positive through March. The RBI noted that foreign exchange reserves and proactive government policy measures are expected to cushion the economy against these external shocks.
