IMF Chief Warns AI Risks May Outweigh Benefits

Kristalina Georgieva urged global cooperation on AI ethical foundations and safeguards during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that the risks of artificial intelligence could exceed its opportunities without an ethical foundation and adequate safeguards. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings, Georgieva advocated for a regulatory approach combining industry self-regulation with cooperation between major AI powers, specifically the United States, China, and India.

While Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark supported the implementation of common-sense standards and third-party evaluations, other officials disagreed on the IMF's framing. U.S. Treasury Undersecretary Erin Browne argued that the IMF is too focused on risks. Browne stated that the U.S. government now uses the term "super intelligence" to describe the technology and is urging IMF shareholders to adopt this terminology in a joint statement.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey expressed optimism that international AI testing standards are aligning. The IMF has flagged that the current AI investment boom could create broader risks for global growth and financial stability.
