Tennessee Sees Highest Property Tax Percentage Increase in U.S.
The Beacon Center of Tennessee reports the state has the highest percentage increase in property taxes over six years due to infrastructure and population growth.
The Beacon Center of Tennessee reported that Tennessee has experienced the highest percentage increase in property taxes over a six-year period compared to any other U.S. state. While 40 states maintain a higher effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing and the increases are concentrated in a few specific communities, the overall trend across the state is rising.
Local governments are driving these increases to fund long-neglected infrastructure upgrades, road repairs, and public libraries. Additional spending is directed toward emergency services and the construction of schools and utilities required to accommodate a significant influx of new residents moving from the East and West Coasts. High spending in affluent areas has also contributed to the upward trend.
