IBM Shares Drop 23% Amid Shift to AI Consulting
IBM shares have declined approximately 23% year-to-date following disappointing second-quarter earnings, despite growth in Red Hat OpenShift and a $5.5 billion generative AI consulting book.
Shares of International Business Machines Corporation have declined between 22% and 23% year-to-date. The downturn followed a significant price plunge in mid-July after the company released disappointing preliminary second-quarter earnings results.
Despite the stock performance, the company reports growth in specific technical sectors. Red Hat's OpenShift grew 29% and distributed infrastructure sales increased 37% year-over-year. The company has also built a generative AI consulting book valued at $5.5 billion.
IBM is currently prioritizing software for secure, self-hosted environments and the maintenance of Linux and mainframe infrastructure for the banking sector. This strategy avoids the high costs associated with frontier AI models and large-scale GPU acquisitions. As of October 1, the stock trades at 17.3 times forward earnings and offers a 3% dividend yield.
