UK Museums Expand Licensing Deals to Offset Funding Cuts

UK cultural institutions are leveraging brand licensing for hotel suites and fashion collaborations to counter rising operational costs and funding gaps.

UK museums and cultural institutions are increasingly utilizing licensing deals to offset funding cuts and rising operational costs. By leveraging their brands and collections, these institutions are expanding into high-end hotel suites, fashion collaborations, and virtual reality experiences to extend their reach beyond physical walls.

Licensing International data indicates the UK art property category grew by over 8% last year, while immersive attractions and promotions surged by 53%. Major institutions, including the British Museum and the National Gallery, recently attended the Brand Licensing Europe conference in London to seek new creative partnerships.

Specific expansions include the Natural History Museum's partnership with Park Plaza London Riverbank for themed suites. The Victoria and Albert Museum launched 63 product ranges in 2025, featuring collaborations with Samsung and CASETiFY.
