Environmental Groups Oppose AI Data Center in Eugene
Beyond Toxics and other environmental groups are challenging a potential large-scale AI data center development at the former Hynix campus in Eugene, Oregon.
Environmental groups in Eugene, Oregon, are opposing the potential development of a large-scale AI data center at the 1.2 million square foot former Hynix campus. The conflict began in July after the city received a zone verification request from a land use lawyer representing an anonymous client to determine if such a facility is permitted under current city code.
Beyond Toxics and its executive director, Jennifer Davis, have raised alarms regarding the environmental impact of the project. Davis noted that the footprint of these facilities is significantly larger than existing micro data centers in the city. The organization expressed concern over the speed and scale of AI data center expansion across the country.
Critics of the proposed site cite massive electricity demands, noise pollution, and the depletion of potable water sources as primary risks. The City of Eugene Planning and Development Department is currently reviewing the request while environmental advocates continue to criticize the corporate secrecy surrounding the site plans.
