Athens Democracy Forum Warns of AI Threats to Democracy
Global leaders and experts at the Athens Democracy Forum called for urgent international regulation of AI to combat disinformation and protect election integrity.
Policymakers, business leaders, and academics gathered in Athens last week for the Athens Democracy Forum to address the risks artificial intelligence poses to global democracy. Participants warned that AI-generated disinformation and deepfakes can rapidly mislead voters and undermine election integrity, citing a fabricated image of Arizona Representative Lorena Austin used in a campaign ad by Turning Point Action.
Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the Greek Finance Minister, and columnist Thomas Friedman urged urgent global collaboration to regulate the technology. Pierrakakis argued that no single nation is large enough to govern AI alone, while other speakers discussed the decline of traditional journalism caused by AI chatbots and the negative impact of social media on youth.
Beyond technology, the forum addressed geopolitical instability following February 28 attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, which triggered retaliatory drone and missile strikes across the region.
