US Building Trades Unions Ally With Tech Giants for AI Infrastructure

Building trades unions are partnering with tech companies like OpenAI and Google to accelerate AI data center construction while lobbying against restrictive state regulations.

Building trades unions have formed strategic alliances with major technology companies to accelerate the construction of artificial intelligence data centers across the United States. These partnerships provide tech giants with the skilled labor required for multibillion-dollar projects, such as the Stargate campus in Michigan and Project Blue in Arizona, while granting unions record growth in membership and apprenticeships.

OpenAI and Google are investing tens of millions of dollars into union-backed training programs to expand the labor pipeline. Some union locals report that data center work now accounts for 40% to 50% of their total man-hours, with the United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters claiming its members work on over 90% of U.S. data center projects.

In exchange for these jobs and investments, unions are actively lobbying against state and local regulations. This includes opposing data center moratoriums in Maine, energy standards in Illinois, and fighting to maintain sales tax exemptions in Virginia. Unions are also countering community objections regarding water and energy shortages by emphasizing job creation and national security interests related to AI superiority over China.

This alignment has created friction within the Democratic party as unions side with pro-business interests. However, union leadership maintains that these partnerships are essential for American workers and argues that data center development would continue regardless of whether organized labor supported the projects.
