Arm Holdings Shifts Focus to AI Data Centers
Arm Holdings is expanding its AI influence by transitioning its business model from smartphones to data center licensing and higher-royalty architectures.
Arm Holdings is expanding its influence in the artificial intelligence sector by shifting its primary business focus from smartphones to data centers. The company operates by licensing fundamental instruction sets and CPU cores to other firms, collecting royalties on every unit shipped rather than manufacturing hardware itself.
Major technology companies have already integrated this model by developing in-house Arm-based processors to support AI clusters. These include Amazon's Graviton, Microsoft's Cobalt, and Alphabet's Axion. Additionally, Nvidia pairs Arm cores with its Vera CPU to enhance AI acceleration.
To increase revenue per chip, Arm is promoting the Armv9 architecture, which commands higher royalty rates, and offering compute subsystems that reduce design time for customers. This strategic pivot has yielded significant financial results, with top-line growth rates of 23% and 24% over the last two fiscal years, exceeding the growth rates recorded during the early smartphone era.
