OpenAI Releases ChatGPT-5 and Open Weight AI Models
OpenAI launched ChatGPT-5 and two open weight models to provide small businesses with self-managed, private alternatives to proprietary AI systems.
OpenAI released the next-generation ChatGPT-5 alongside two open weight models in August 2025. While ChatGPT-5 drew the majority of industry attention, the open weight models target small businesses by removing common barriers related to cost and data privacy.
These models allow companies to deploy AI locally or offline, ensuring customer data remains in-house and eliminating metered service fees or vendor lock-in. When combined with AI agent frameworks such as Goose, which was released by Block in January, these models can execute concrete business operations including inventory management and spreadsheet updates.
The Federal government of the United States has identified open source AI as a critical component of American innovation. Through its AI Action Plan, the government encourages the adoption of these tools among smaller enterprises to ensure AI benefits are distributed broadly across the economy.
