Toshiba Invests 60 Billion Yen to Double AI Storage Capacity
Toshiba will invest 60 billion yen in Philippines facilities to double its hard disk drive production for AI data centers by fiscal 2027.
Toshiba plans to double its production capacity for hard disk drives used in artificial intelligence data centers by fiscal 2027. The company will invest approximately 60 billion yen ($380 million) in its manufacturing facilities in the Philippines, marking its first major drive-related investment in five years.
This expansion aims to increase the company's market share by storage capacity from just over 10% to 30% over the medium term. The investment introduces new production lines for drives with up to 40% higher per-unit capacity, enabling the mass production of 65-terabyte-class HDDs by 2030 and eventually 100-terabyte-class products.
The move responds to growing demand for high-capacity storage in AI infrastructure. While solid-state drives are common, HDDs provide a lower-cost alternative for the massive data requirements of AI systems.
