Pakistan and World Bank Plan Investment-Led Growth Strategy
Federal Minister Ahad Khan Cheema and World Bank leaders agreed in Bangkok to accelerate infrastructure projects and expand private-sector investment in Pakistan.
Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema met with World Bank Group leadership in Bangkok during the 2026 World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings to accelerate Pakistan's economic development. In a series of discussions on October 15 and 16, Cheema sought to transition the country from macroeconomic stabilization toward sustainable, investment-led growth and productive employment.
Cheema requested increased technical and financial support to implement the Country Partnership Framework 2026–2035. He proposed the creation of Project Readiness Facilities to speed up approvals and the adoption of digital monitoring systems to track development outcomes. Key priorities identified include climate resilience, water and sanitation, and the ML-1 Railway Upgradation Project, which intends to create an 1,800-km Economic Railway Corridor.
Further discussions with World Bank Group President Ajay Banga focused on high-impact investments in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, healthcare, and minerals. The Government of Pakistan aims to double SME financing by 2028 and is exploring the establishment of a sovereign wealth fund to mobilize investment. World Bank officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting these priority sectors and expanding private-sector activity, emphasizing the need for partners capable of delivering sustainable results for businesses and the population.
