Argentina Vows to Stop UK Oil Projects in Falklands

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced measures to block offshore oil exploitation in the Falkland Islands to assert Argentinian sovereignty over the disputed territory.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced that Argentina will take action to stop the exploitation of offshore oilfields in the Falkland Islands. Speaking in Buenos Aires, Quirno condemned the British government for refusing to negotiate the sovereignty dispute and for facilitating the Sea Lion oil project in the North Falkland Basin.

This escalation follows a September 28 deadline set by President Javier Milei, who characterized the oil project as an "unlawful act." Milei warned that the United Kingdom must halt the project or face binding arbitration under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Argentina claims the UK is violating a 1976 UN resolution that prohibits unilateral actions in the disputed area.

Quirno warned that third parties assisting in the exploitation of these resources would jeopardize their ability to share in the benefits of Argentina's future growth. The United Kingdom maintains that the islands will remain a British overseas territory, citing a 2013 referendum in which 99.8% of residents voted to remain under British administration.
