SpaceX Acquires AI Coding Startup Cursor for $60 Billion
SpaceX acquired AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion to accelerate its software capabilities and compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. completed a $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding startup Cursor on August 14, 2026. The deal represents one of the largest tech acquisitions in history and is designed to bolster the company's ability to compete with AI rivals Anthropic PBC and OpenAI by streamlining coding tasks through advanced AI tools.
As part of the agreement, the Cursor team will gain access to the extensive GPU fleet maintained by SpaceX to develop more powerful and economical models. The integration follows a series of rapid product launches, including Grok 4.5—a model specialized in finance, legal, and coding tasks—as well as the release of Grok Bot and Grok 4.6.
Elon Musk drove the acquisition to ensure the company succeeds in the software sector. He predicted that AI revenue will surpass all other SpaceX revenue by September.
