Gujarat to Install 20,000 Biogas Plants in Fiscal 2027

The Government of Gujarat will install 20,000 new individual biogas plants during fiscal year 2027 as part of the GOBARdhan programme. This expansion follows the Union Cabinet's approval of the National Circular Bioenergy Scheme – GOBARdhan, which carries a total outlay of ₹23,731 crore.

The initiative utilizes the state's dairy cooperative network to transform livestock waste into organic manure and clean cooking fuel. Since fiscal year 2024, the state has already operationalized more than 14,000 plants across 88 clusters. To facilitate adoption, beneficiaries receive ₹25,000 in financial assistance through the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and contribute ₹5,000 for the installation of 2-cubic metre HDPE biogas plants.

State officials intend for the program to reduce dependence on LPG and lower carbon dioxide emissions. By eliminating smoke from traditional cooking methods, the government aims to improve overall rural health.
