Starlink Restores Polish Roaming After Government Threatens Funding

The Polish government successfully pressured SpaceX to restore equal Starlink roaming access for its citizens after the company excluded Poland from a European roaming zone covering over 30 other countries. The restriction, implemented in July, forced Polish users to treat travel within Europe as international travel, requiring passport submissions, live portraits, and more expensive service plans.

Radosław Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, led the response by threatening to reconsider Poland's annual 50 million dollar expenditure on Starlink services. Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski supported the demand, stating that Poland is not a second-class market and rejecting the company's treatment of Poles as inferior to other Europeans. The dispute was particularly sensitive given that Poland has purchased approximately 25,000 Starlink terminals for Ukrainian forces, which provide critical frontline communications and drone operations.

Following the public pressure and social media exchanges between Sikorski and CEO Elon Musk, Starlink updated its support page to include Poland in the grouped European region for Roam travel. While SpaceX did not provide an official explanation for the initial exclusion, industry observers suggest the move may have been an attempt to prevent consumer hardware from being diverted for military use in the Russo-Ukrainian war.
