Bangladesh Seeks Chinese Support for Strategic Teesta River Project

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman requested Chinese aid for the Teesta River project during a Beijing visit, while India moves to reactivate dormant bilateral ties with Dhaka.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman conducted an official visit to Beijing from May 5 to 7, 2026, to strengthen the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between Bangladesh and China. During meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Rahman formally requested technical and financial support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. This request signals a strategic pivot by the newly formed BNP government, led by Tarique Rahman, as the Teesta River flows through India's strategically sensitive Siliguri Corridor.

Wang Yi expressed China's readiness to align the Belt and Road Initiative with Bangladesh's national development strategies and encourage Chinese investment in infrastructure and digital sectors. To address potential regional tensions, Wang emphasized that China's relations with South Asian countries are not directed against any third party. Rahman reaffirmed Bangladesh's adherence to the one-China principle and support for Taiwan as part of China.

Simultaneously, the Government of India is attempting to rebuild engagement with Dhaka. Following a farewell visit by outgoing High Commissioner Pranay Verma on May 4, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced the reactivation of over 40 dormant bilateral cooperation mechanisms. India is prioritizing the restoration of visa services and technical discussions on the Teesta agreement via the Joint Rivers Commission, following previous Indian offers of technical assistance for the basin in 2024.
