Calcutta Stock Exchange Shares Surge Amid Revival Plans

Unlisted shares of the Calcutta Stock Exchange more than doubled after the West Bengal government announced plans to revive the dormant bourse.

Unlisted shares of the Calcutta Stock Exchange Ltd. have risen from approximately 900 rupees in early June to around 2,100 rupees, more than doubling in value over three months. This price surge follows a June 25 announcement by West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta that the state government is working to revive the dormant exchange.

In its August 19 annual report, the exchange board revealed plans to ask the Securities and Exchange Board of India to pause a voluntary exit application filed in February 2025. The exchange intends to expand its operations into mutual funds, carbon trading, commodities, currencies, equity derivatives, and bond markets, with a specific focus on small and medium-sized enterprises.

Although the exchange had 1,507 listed companies and 500 registered brokers as of March 2026, it has seen no active trading for years. A successful restart remains dependent on securing anchor investors who meet capital-adequacy requirements and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals.
