S&P 500 Hits Record Highs Amid Cautious Investor Sentiment
The S&P 500 breached 7,700 on strong second-quarter earnings growth despite persistent investor concerns over inflation and upcoming US midterm elections.
The S&P 500 Index reached record highs after breaching the 7,700 level, fueled by a 32% growth in second-quarter corporate earnings. Despite these strong fundamentals, investor sentiment remains pessimistic. Data from the American Association of Individual Investors shows that stock-market bears have outnumbered bulls in 20 of the last 25 weeks.
Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and other market strategists attribute this caution to a combination of inflation concerns, geopolitical hostilities in the Middle East, a divided Federal Reserve, and the November US midterm elections. Bank of America reports that strategists still recommend allocating 56% of capital to stocks despite these headwinds.
Analysts from 22V Research and Deutsche Bank AG suggest that the gap between pessimistic investor positioning and robust corporate earnings may create a significant buying opportunity. They indicate that this mismatch could lead to higher-than-normal returns over the next six months.
