Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is investigating a shift in how the United Kingdom funds green infrastructure, proposing that billions of pounds in green levies be moved from consumer energy bills to general taxation. The move aims to mitigate predicted electricity bill increases of over £400 next year, a rise driven largely by the Iran war.
Analysis by the MCS Foundation indicates that shifting these costs to the Treasury could save customers an average of £120 annually, though it would increase tax costs by approximately £3bn. Fahnbulleh stated that her mark of success is whether she can get bills down, noting that this is the only thing she is in the job to do.
While committed to reducing costs, Fahnbulleh did not recommit to the specific £300 reduction target set by her predecessor, Ed Miliband. She maintained that the government will continue climate crisis actions despite political opposition from the Conservative and Reform parties, acknowledging that the government must determine how to recover costs in the most fair way.
