Beau Bayh Wins Indiana Secretary of State Race
Democrat Beau Bayh defeated Republican Max Engling to become the first Democrat to win a statewide office in Indiana since 2012.
Democrat Beau Bayh won the election for Indiana Secretary of State on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican Max Engling. Bayh secured over 51% of the vote, totaling more than 940,000 votes to Engling's 787,000. The victory marks the first time a Democrat has held the Secretary of State position since 1994 and the first time a Democrat has won any statewide office in Indiana since 2012.
A Marine Corps veteran and son of former Governor Evan Bayh, the Secretary of State-elect pledged to conduct an independent audit of the office. He intends to address what he described as wasteful spending and insider dealing, stating that too many decisions have been made behind closed doors by insiders.
Other statewide results included a projected win for Democrat Jessica Bailey for State Comptroller and the reelection of Republican Daniel Elliot as State Treasurer. Additionally, the newly established Lincoln Party secured ballot access after candidate Greg Ballard received more than 2% of the vote. Indiana voters also approved constitutional amendments regarding the denial of bail for public safety risks and residency requirements for city or town court judges.
