Ülle Madise Sworn In as President of Estonia
Ülle Madise assumed office as the President of Estonia on October 12, succeeding Alar Karis and emphasizing national unity and defense.
Ülle Madise was sworn in as the President of Estonia on October 12, 2026, during a ceremony at the Riigikogu building in Tallinn. The 51-year-old former Chancellor of Justice becomes the second female president since the restoration of Estonia's independence. She was elected on September 2 by the 101-member parliament, receiving 71 votes.
During the transition, outgoing President Alar Karis placed the presidential chain of office around Madise's neck. Karis concluded his five-year term by praising the adaptability of the Estonian people and urging political leaders to address the country's shrinking and aging population. The ceremony concluded with both leaders signing the guestbook at Toompea Castle and inspecting the Guard Battalion's honour guard.
In her inaugural address, Madise called for national unity and inclusivity, stating that all citizens should feel they belong regardless of their native languages or views. She emphasized the importance of the Estonian language and culture while stressing a balance of power between the presidency, parliament, government, and courts. Addressing global instability, she advocated for a stronger national defense, continued support for Ukraine, and deeper cooperation with NATO, Poland, and Nordic-Baltic allies.
Following the inauguration, Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his congratulations to Madise, expressing a desire to deepen bilateral relations and political trust as the two nations approach the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
