Intesa Sanpaolo Launches $35 Billion Bid for Monte dei Paschi
Intesa Sanpaolo has launched a $35 billion takeover bid for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena after Banco BPM withdrew from competing merger talks.
Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena is evaluating strategic options after receiving a $35 billion cash-and-stock takeover bid from Intesa Sanpaolo. The bid follows the withdrawal of Banco BPM from separate merger negotiations, leaving Intesa Sanpaolo as the primary suitor.
The board of Monte dei Paschi has previously raised concerns regarding the risks and the price offered by Intesa Sanpaolo. Despite these reservations, the bank enters the process from a position of financial strength. As of June 30, the lender maintained a CET1 ratio of 16.3%.
Recent financial reports show the bank's profitability is increasing. Second-quarter net profit rose to 610.2 million euros, compared to 479.4 million euros in the previous year, while revenue climbed to 2.06 billion euros. The bank is currently working with advisors to determine how to maximize long-term value for its stakeholders.
