Ol Kalou By-Election Marred by Violence and Bribery Allegations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission prepares for the Ol Kalou by-election amid petitions for postponement and reports of voter intimidation and violence.

Voters in the Ol Kalou constituency are scheduled to vote in a parliamentary by-election on July 17, 2026. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) views the vote as a critical test of its operational capacity and public confidence following a leadership reconstitution ahead of the 2027 general election.

The lead-up to the vote has been characterized by volatility, including reports of property destruction, massive voter bribery, and intimidation. Public interest activist Francis Awino petitioned the IEBC to postpone the election, alleging that the political climate fails to meet constitutional thresholds for a free and fair process. Tensions have escalated between supporters of the United Democratic Alliance and opposition forces led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who accused the IEBC of bias.

Security concerns have intensified following an alleged armed attack on MP Kanini Kega. In response, IEBC Chairman Erastus Ethekon warned voters against photographing ballots to protect the secrecy of the vote and cautioned against mobilizing goons. Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka described the process as a litmus test for the commission's independence from the administration of President William Ruto.
