US Justice Department Sentences Ransomware Negotiator Among Global Cyber Incidents

The United States Department of Justice announced prison sentences for Deniss Zolotarjovs, a negotiator for the Russian-linked Karakurt ransomware gang, and two U.S. nationals, Kejia and Zhenxing Wang. The Wangs were convicted of helping North Korean IT workers infiltrate American companies. Zolotarjovs received a sentence of over eight years in prison.

These legal actions coincided with a series of international security breaches. In Taiwan, police arrested a university student for hacking the high-speed rail radio system, an action that triggered emergency braking on four trains on April 5. In France, authorities detained a 15-year-old for stealing data from the National Agency for Secure Documents.

Technical vulnerabilities also emerged across major platforms. Microsoft Edge was found to load saved passwords into memory in plaintext, and Ivanti issued a warning regarding a zero-day vulnerability in its Endpoint Manager Mobile. Additionally, Cisco Talos identified a China-linked actor, UAT-8302, targeting governments in South America and Southeastern Europe, while a massive 2.45 billion-request DDoS attack disrupted services globally.
