AfD Prepares Talks With Russia To Restore Gas Supplies

Leadership of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is preparing for potential talks with Russian officials to restore natural gas supplies to Germany. The proposed summit, which could take place as early as March 2027, would involve AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund and economic envoy for President Vladimir Putin.

Organizers suggest hosting the meeting in India, Israel, or the United Arab Emirates and hope to include the United States. However, a senior U.S. official stated that representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have not been invited. The AfD maintains that the talks are contingent upon the establishment of a peace framework between Russia and Ukraine.

Following a recent electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt where the party won 43.8% of the vote, the AfD argues that returning to cheap Russian energy is essential for German economic success. Critics from the Green party and the Christian Democratic Union characterize the initiative as a security risk and a betrayal of Ukraine.
