Vietnam Total Trade Surpasses $1 Trillion for First Time

Vietnam reached a historic $1.01 trillion in total goods trade during the first 10 months of 2026, driven largely by foreign-invested enterprises.

The Government of Vietnam recorded a historic milestone as total goods trade surpassed $1 trillion for the first time in the first 10 months of 2026. Total turnover reached an estimated $1.01 trillion, marking a 32.3 percent increase from the previous year. Exports grew by approximately 27.4 percent to nearly $500 billion, while imports rose 37.6 percent to over $507 billion.

Processed and manufactured industrial products comprised 87.4 percent of total export value, while foreign-invested enterprises drove over three-quarters of the total trade turnover. The agro-forestry-fishery sector also showed strength, with exports reaching $62.891 billion and contributing to a sector-specific trade surplus of $18.6 billion. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung projected that agro-forestry-fishery exports will exceed $74 billion by the end of 2026.

Despite a cumulative 10-month trade deficit of approximately $12.7 billion, Vietnam recorded a trade surplus of $6.8 billion in October alone. To sustain this momentum, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is drafting a goods import-export strategy through 2030 with a vision to 2045. The plan aims to place Vietnam among the world's top 10 trading nations by 2045 and increase the share of domestic enterprises in national exports to 30 percent by 2030 and 40 percent by 2045.
