Chinese Developers Overtake U.S. in Open-Access AI Market

Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Hugging Face reveals that Chinese developers have overtaken the United States in the global market for open-access AI models. Chinese-made models accounted for 17% of global downloads over the past year, edging out the 15.8% share held by American developers.

This shift results from a strategic divergence in development philosophies. While U.S. firms like Google and OpenAI prioritize closed, proprietary frontier models to maintain commercial control, Chinese companies such as DeepSeek and Alibaba Cloud frequently release efficient, open-weight models. These Chinese systems are gaining significant traction across Asia, Africa, and Latin America due to their affordability, local language performance, and the level of control they grant users over data and costs.

Despite U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors, Chinese researchers have maintained momentum using optimization techniques like model distillation. Analysts suggest this market dominance enables China to shape global information ecosystems and embed political biases aligned with the Chinese Communist Party.
