Centrist Democrats Launch $15 Million Campaign Against Democratic Socialism

Third Way is spending $15 million to discredit democratic socialist candidates following progressive victories in key presidential swing states.

The centrist wing of the Democratic Party is launching a $15 million campaign to discredit democratic socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America. Led by the group Third Way, the initiative utilizes opposition research and social media programs to target candidates associated with the far-left, whom moderates argue pose a risk to the party's success in general elections.

This offensive follows a series of progressive victories, most notably the win by Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate primary. El-Sayed defeated the establishment-backed Representative Haley Stevens despite a $32 million spending effort from a super PAC linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Third Way President Jonathan Cowan characterized the rise of radical candidates in presidential swing states as a mortal danger to the party. Conversely, progressives view these wins as a populist insurgency and seek to prove the viability of their platform in general elections. Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party, suggested that centrist critics are missing the plot regarding the current political momentum.
