Former European and Russian Officials Meet in Vienna Over Ukraine

Former senior officials from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia met in Vienna last month to explore potential conditions for peace talks to end the war in Ukraine. The meeting was an initiative of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Swiss-based think tank, and served as a track two informal discussion to exchange ideas for conflict resolution independently of official government mandates.

Participants included former British national security advisor Tim Barrow, former German State Secretary Markus Ederer, and French diplomat Pierre Vimont. The effort coincides with broader attempts by European powers to establish direct contact with the Kremlin, though the willingness of Vladimir Putin to engage remains uncertain.

Government reactions to the meeting were mixed. The United Kingdom stated it supports efforts for a lasting peace, and sources suggest France was aware of the gathering. However, the German foreign ministry claimed it was not aware of the discussions and stated they were not conducted on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office.
