PenCom Intervenes in Lagos State Pension Payment Delays
The National Pension Commission is negotiating with the Lagos State Government to resolve delayed pension increases following retiree protests in Ikeja.
The National Pension Commission has entered discussions with the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Pension Commission to address delays in implementing approved pension increases and wage awards for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The federal regulator's intervention follows protests by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and other retirees at Lagos House and the state House of Assembly in Ikeja, where police used tear gas to disperse the crowds.
PenCom explained that the delay stems from a complex administrative process involving the determination of eligibility, the calculation of actuarial liabilities, the securing of necessary funding, and the transfer of data to Pension Fund Administrators. While the commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of retirees and ensuring compliance with pension laws, it has not yet established a specific timeline for when the adjustments will be reflected in payments.
