U.S. Department of Energy Grants X-energy $1 Billion for Texas Nuclear Project

The U.S. Department of Energy is providing X-energy with an additional $1 billion for an advanced nuclear project in Texas, bringing the total federal funding for the venture to $2.15 billion since 2021. The funding is distributed through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program and requires a 50/50 cost-share match from private investment.

X-energy and Dow plan to deploy the reactors at the Dow petrochemical and plastics complex in Seadrift. The installation will replace existing energy and steam units to provide both electricity and industrial steam. This project aims to be the first grid-scale advanced nuclear reactor serving an industrial site in North America.

The companies submitted a construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year. They target the start of operations for the early 2030s.
