Analyst Downgrades Semiconductor Sector Over AI ROI Concerns
An investment analyst downgraded the semiconductor sector to sell, citing unsustainable capital expenditures and a lack of proven profitability for major AI labs.
An investment analyst has downgraded the semiconductor sector to a sell rating, arguing that AI stocks have not yet reached their bottom. The analyst identifies rising interest rates and high debt costs as immediate headwinds, estimating that AI companies may need to issue roughly $700 billion in new bonds by 2027.
The analyst warns that current capital expenditures are not supported by sustainable returns on investment. To justify current spending, AI companies would need to generate between $2.5 trillion and $3 trillion in annual revenue by 2030. The analyst also highlights a dangerous level of customer concentration, noting that the industry buildout relies heavily on OpenAI and Anthropic, neither of which has a proven track record of consistent profitability.
As a result of these projections, the analyst sold NVIDIA Corporation holdings from the Best of Breed Growth Stocks Portfolio. The analyst predicts that hyperscalers will eventually slash capital expenditures once the lack of ROI becomes apparent, a sentiment that contributed to a decline in Meta Platforms Incorporated stock despite strong results. The analyst further disputes the growth projections underpinning the valuations of Broadcom Inc and Micron Technology.
