Power Grid Strains Threaten 75% of Australian AI Data Centers
Strained power grids and local opposition threaten to delay or cancel over 75% of planned AI data centers in Sydney and Melbourne.
Over 75% of planned artificial intelligence data centers in Australia's largest cities face potential delays or cancellation. Strained power grids and local opposition have created a bottleneck for more than 40 large-scale centers currently planned or under construction in Sydney and Melbourne.
Only 23% of these projects have publicly confirmed secured electricity supplies or grid connections. The stalled developments represent a projected investment of more than A$100 billion ($70 billion).
This infrastructure gap threatens the strategic ambition of the Government of Australia to establish the country as a primary artificial intelligence hub for the Asia Pacific region.
