Italy Hourly Contractual Wages Rise 2.5 Percent in September

Italy's hourly contractual wages grew 2.5 percent in September, though growth remained below the 4.2 percent inflation rate, causing a decline in real wages.

Hourly contractual wages in Italy rose 2.5 percent year-on-year in September 2026, according to data from the national statistics agency. Despite the increase, wage growth remained significantly below the annual inflation rate of 4.2 percent, leading to a decrease in real wages for workers.

ISTAT reported that this is the second consecutive quarter where wage growth has failed to keep pace with inflation. While wages remained flat between August and September, the year-on-year growth varied across different sectors of the economy.

Public sector wages saw a higher increase of 3.2 percent compared to the 2.3 percent growth in the private sector. Within the private sector, agriculture recorded the highest growth at 3.3 percent, followed by industry at 2.6 percent and private services at 2.1 percent.
