Major UK Charities Close Hundreds of Retail Stores

Leading UK charities are shutting hundreds of retail outlets due to rising costs, declining footfall, and competition from online secondhand platforms.

Oxfam and other major UK charities are closing hundreds of retail outlets as rising operational costs and declining town center footfall make traditional storefronts unsustainable. The British Heart Foundation plans to shut approximately 150 stores over two financial years, while Cancer Research UK has confirmed the closure of 90 shops. Oxfam is considering closing up to 100 of its 500-plus locations.

Industry pressures include increased competition from online secondhand platforms such as Vinted, eBay, and Depop. The sector also faces a decline in the market price for rag, the term for unsellable clothing used for recycling, and a drop in donation quality caused by the prevalence of fast fashion.

Despite these closures, the Charity Retail Association reports a shift toward larger one-stop stores. The association also notes that the rise of resellers and influencers who buy charity stock to sell online has helped normalize secondhand shopping among younger generations.
