OpenAI Solves Millennium Prize Math Problem Amid Backlash
OpenAI solved a 90-year-old mathematical problem involving Navier-Stokes equations, sparking a conflict with the mathematical community over the role of AI in science.
OpenAI models solved a 90-year-old unresolved mathematical problem related to the Navier-Stokes equations, identifying a singularity that challenges a Millennium Problem. The Clay Mathematics Institute had previously offered a $1 million prize for the solution to this specific problem.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed empathy for the mathematical community, acknowledging the sadness and melancholy associated with AI changing the nature of discovery. He stated he wants to find a way to conduct research that is sensitive to the communities that have driven the field for centuries.
The achievement triggered significant backlash from mathematicians. Twenty-eight Fields Medal winners issued an open letter warning that using mathematical problems as AI benchmarks is detrimental to the science. In response to these criticisms and warnings of destructive impacts on the field, OpenAI withdrew from a math hackathon at the California Institute of Technology.
