Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin Announces December Resignation

Guy Parmelin announced he will step down as Swiss Economics Minister on December 31, 2026, after 11 years in office.

Guy Parmelin, the Swiss Economics Minister and former President, announced on Friday in Bern that he will resign from office on December 31, 2026. The 66-year-old member of the right-wing Swiss People’s Party stated that his passion for the role is no longer as strong as it was at the start and expressed a desire to make room for new blood during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.

During his 11-year tenure, which included leading the defense ministry and serving two rotating terms as president, Parmelin managed the Covid-19 pandemic and the imposition of a 39% US tariff in August 2025. He cited these as some of his most challenging moments, while highlighting the successful negotiation of free-trade agreements with India and Mercosur.

The Swiss People’s Party has opened nominations for his successor until October 23, with an election scheduled for December 9.
