Lancaster County Cancels Improper Non-Citizen Voter Registrations

The Lancaster County Board of Elections canceled five improperly registered voters after the Pennsylvania Department of State identified a non-citizen who had registered through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Motor Voter Program. Following the discovery, the board referred cases involving actual attempts to vote to the District Attorney’s Office for potential investigation and prosecution.

County officials are now reviewing all available registration records associated with the Motor Voter Program to identify further discrepancies. The Pennsylvania Department of State noted that while non-citizen registration is extremely rare, the agency takes allegations of unlawful registration seriously.

The incident triggered a political dispute over voter identification laws. Congressman Lloyd Smucker cited the case as justification for passing the SAVE Act voter ID measure. In response, the Lancaster County Democratic Committee condemned the move, arguing that such legislation could potentially disenfranchise legal voters.
